Killer sharks in Byron Bay

Had a few shark attacks here in Byron Bay over the last month.

My probability of being attacked is low even though the longfin Mako’s speed has been recorded at over 60 mph in short bursts, its full-grown length is over 4 m (13 ft) and they can jump up to 6 m (20 ft) in the air. On my end I have a very sharp spare car key in my leggy and can move pretty quickly when motivated.

One knocked local sportswomen, Linda Whitehurst out of her kayak. A few weeks later and another rogue 3 metre Mako launched itself out of the water 2 metres away onto local surfer Craig Evans who was able to escape and paddle back to shore. Craig suffered minor injuries. I’d freakin love to find out how he managed that just in case. Its in the local paper here.

Anyway you only live once right? “Get busy living or get busy dying” (Shawshank Redemption) … so I’m going for a sesh at the same break right now. Its only 4 mins away from my house. There will be countless other targets of opportunity with all the backpackers here for summer.

Regardless I have to go surfing as I’ve gotta go work in Asia for a month in 2 days and won’t be back at my local break until mid December. BTW: A shark didn’t bite my mates board in half he did that coming off a savage 10 foot barrel at Stradbroke Island !
